It was raining in the South of France on tonight's (January 16) First Dates Hotel and the episode had the waterworks going for viewers too.

Sad stories aren't exactly uncommon on First Dates, but mum-of-three Julie's story was possibly the darkest one yet on the series as she recalled how her first husband was shot dead in front of her while they were on holiday.

"I witnessed everything obviously, but it's not a memory, it's a black space. The next thing I remember is someone helping me, but he was just gone," she explained.

And viewers were absolutely broken by the revelation.

Sadly, Julie's date Dave didn't turn out to be the man for her, but they did seem to decide to be friends instead of going on a second date.

"I think you're lovely, I've had a fantastic time. Unfortunately, it was a friend spark, more than a romantic spark," she told him. "I'm looking for the perfect scenario, the romance and everything that goes around it. It might sound terrible and awful, but I need to have the whole thing."

First Dates Hotel continues next Monday (January 23) at 10pm on Channel 4.
