Fire contained to single apartment on Eric Street

Fire contained to single apartment on Eric Street

The St. John's Regional Fire Department managed to hold an apartment building fire to a single unit on Wednesday night.

Firefighters and members of the RNC responded to the call at 11:40 p.m. to a multi-unit building on Eric Street, near Hamilton Avenue.

The building was evacuated, but the fire did not spread to any of the other 31 apartments. Ventilation issues caused by the smoke resulted in the tenants of the entire building being kept out until at least 2 a.m., said Barry Burke, acting platoon chief.

There was nobody in the apartment at the time of the fire. The cause is under investigation.

Salvation Army and Red Cross provided assistance to the displaced tenants.
