Charlotte, Triangle-area girls tennis players have big days at regionals

Myers Park swept the singles and doubles championships Saturday in the 4A West Regional girls’ tennis meet at Ardrey Kell.

And a pair of freshman captured singles championships in 4A regionals involving Wake County teams.

Girls in all four classes competed Friday and Saturday in regionals, with all semifinalists advancing to next weekend’s state championships.

Results from a number of regional tournaments were not available late Saturday night, but here are some of the players who have qualified for next weekend’s play.

4A WEST

Top-seeded Elyse Duley, a Myers Park senior who went 10-0 in the regular season, downed Independence’s Madeline Fowler 6-5, 6-3 in the finals.

Also qualifying in singles were third-place Ann Mason Moore of Myers Park and fourth-place Shruthi Ramireddy of Ardrey Kell.

The doubles finals was an all-Myers Park affair. Carson Weber and Mia Basinger got past Meredyth Barr and Ella Bumgardner 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 for the title.

Also advancing to the state tournament are two Ardrey Kell teams – third-place Hannah Biggers and Silvia Petriski, and fourth-place Julia McMillan and Camden Wallace.

4A MIDEAST

Freshman Brianna Viets of Cary took the singles championship, beating Gabriella Cicin of Apex in the finals.

Green Level got its first-ever regional championship in tennis, with Diya Ramchandani and Ariana Mohan taking first place.Among other teams qualifying for the state tournament was Fuquay-Varina’s Sophia and Natalie Molanphy.

4A EAST

Millbrook freshman Jill Gruber swept to the single championship.

Doubles qualifiers for the state tournament are first-place Anna Haskins and Alex Lee of Hoggard; runner-up Diana Higgins and Rachel Alvis of Leesville Road; third-place Euly Gimson and Maia Stewart of Broughton; and Cardinal Gibbons’ Payton Baxter and Sidney Malek in fourth place.

3A MIDEAST

East Chapel Hill dominated this tournament, sweeping first and second places in both singles and doubles.

Clara Mast beat Owen Soccorso for the singles title. In doubles, Ingrid Mast and Maddy Moore took the title, beating Asha Sata and Mya Tan.

No other Triangle-area players qualified for the state tournament.

Tournament director Bob Owens said the Mideast Regional was a freshman-dominated event, with seven of the 16 singles entries being ninth-graders. And six of 16 doubles teams were freshmen.

2A WEST

Fred T. Foard’s Alexis Wolgemuth won the singles title, beating Hendersonville’s Olivia Pursley 6-2, 6-0 in the finals. Newton-Conover’s Alex Allison beat Lake Norman Charter’s Sidney Ross for third place 6-2, 6-2.

All four advance to the state tournament.

In doubles, the team of freshman Eliza Perry and her senior sister McCollough won the title, beating Hendersonville teammates Lindsay Bull and Ava Heffner in the finals. The Bull-Heffner team withdrew due to injury.

Also qualifying for the state tournament were West Lincoln’s Brogan Heavner and Etta Godfrey and East Lincoln’s Olivia Prevost and Olivia Franco. The West Lincoln team won the third-place match 6-3, 5-7, (10-5).

2A MIDWEST

Oak Grove’s Jessica Fuchas, the tournament’s top seed, beat Ashe County’s Elizabeth Wallace 6-2, 6-1 for the title. Also headed to state are third-place Lucy Bovard of Mount Pleasant and fourth-place Abbey Lawson of Salisbury. Bovard beat Lawson 6-3, 6-2 for third place.

The doubles championship was an all-Salisbury event. Lillie Rusher and Meredith Burton beat Millie Wymbs and Abby Campion 6-2, 6-2 for the title. Teams from Forbush and Oak Grove finished third and fourth.

2A MIDEAST

North Johnston standout Ariel Pearce took second place in singles, qualifying for the state tournament.

2A EAST

State qualifiers in singles were Mary Emma Holscher (Washington), Katie Sink (Croatan), Marley Renner (Currituck County) and Hinson Britt (Greene Central).

Doubles qualifiers were McKinsey Harper and Kristen Colie (Greene Central), Ellie Hornthal and Zoe Pureza (Northeastern), Kaylee Tucker and Venancia Miller (Greene Central), and Grace Meyer and Mia Raynor (Croatan).

1A WEST

Top-seeded Anderson Schubert of Pine Lake Prep swept second-seeded Emma Grace Bost of Gray Stone Day 6-0, 6-1 for the title. Third place went to South Stanly’s Lacy Noble, who got past Lourdes Lopez of Bishop McGuinness 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles, top-seeded Tara Martin and Evelyn Ruedisueli of East Surry beat Pine Lake Prep’s Sophia Taffet and Sriya Mannepalli 6-2, 6-2 in the finals. In the third-place match, Olivia Perkins and Ella Brandt of Mount Airy got past East Wilkes’ Sylvia Prevette and Tristen Blevins 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

All of those singles and doubles players advance to the state tournament.
