FedEx closing facility outside Charlotte and laying off dozens of employees

FedEx is laying off 69 workers at its facility in Catawba County starting Sept. 3 and closing the site, according to a June 12 N.C. Department of Commerce filing by the company.

FedEx closed its Conover facility due to business needs, according to FedEx spokesman David Westrick.

Three affected employees at FedEx’s Conover facility at 1228 Commerce St. are managers, and the other 66 are couriers.

Some employees will keep their jobs but work at different locations, while others will be offered relocation, severance or a leave of absence to explore other opportunities within the company, according to added the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) filing with the Department of Commerce.

FedEx notified impacted employees several months before the changes will take place, according to Westrick. These employees are not part of a union, and impacted workers with greater seniority will not replace workers with less seniority who still have jobs.

Conover is an hour northwest of Charlotte. Catawba County’s 3.2% unemployment rate in April was the 45th lowest unemployment rate in the state, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce’s most recent unemployment figures.

FedEx’s facility is the third location in Catawba County impacted by layoffs this year, including the HNI Work Place Furnishings LLC layoff in May that impacted 221 employees at its Hickory location. In total, 372 Catawba County employees have been impacted by layoffs.
