Nineties action class Face/Off is officially getting a sequel!

Director Adam Wingard has confirmed that he's helming a sequel to the 1997 film which starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.

In an Instagram post on Friday (February 12), Wingard described Face/Off as "a perfect action movie", while also confirming his film will not be a remake.

"I would NEVER re-imagine or remake FACE/OFF," Wingard wrote. "It’s a perfect action movie. Simon Barrett and I are writing a direct SEQUEL! :) :)."

Wingard is also directing the upcoming Godzilla vs Kong and will write the Face/Off sequel script with longtime collaborator Simon Barrett.

The original Face/Off was directed by John Woo. It starred Travolta and Cage as an FBI special agent and a terrorist, respectively.

In the film, the two sworn enemies assumed each other’s identity by actually swapping faces after undergoing a highly experimental face transplant surgery.

Variety reports that the upcoming remake is expected to have a brand new cast – and we might have perfect A-List pairing.

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have long been engaged in a (playful) social media feud, which has led to fans previously suggesting they should remake Face/Off.

Jackman was asked about the idea last August and responded: "I have not heard that. Is it possible to shoot it where we are actually never together? Is that possible?"

Yes Hugh, it is possible.

Godzilla vs Kong is coming soon to the UK and will premiere in cinemas and on HBO Max on March 26 in the US. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K.
