Explosive Device Found in George Soros's Mailbox, New York Times Reports
(Bloomberg) -- An explosive device was found in a mailbox at billionaire philanthropist George Soros’s home in a New York suburb and disposed of by police, the New York Times reported.
Soros, a favored foil for right-wing groups in the U.S. and Europe who have accused him of acts ranging from hiring protesters to demonstrate against President Donald Trump to funding a caravan of immigrants heading for the U.S. border from central America, wasn’t home when it was discovered.
The device was detonated by bomb squad technicians, according to the report, which cited a law enforcement official the newspaper didn’t identify.
An employee of the residence opened the package, revealed what appeared to be an explosive device, and placed the package in a wooded area, New York Times said, citing a statement from the police. The Bedford Police Department received a call about a suspicious package at about 3:45 p.m.
The police said they had turned the case over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment by the New York Times. The bureau’s New York office tweeted late on Monday that it’s conducting an investigation at a residence in Bedford.
Soros, a Hungarian-born Jew, survived the Holocaust in his native country before emigrating to the U.K. and then the U.S. He then made his fortune, estimated at $8 billion, managing a hedge fund. He has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to causes including his Open Society Foundations, which advocates building democratic values in former communist Europe, and to Democratic Party candidates and initiatives in the U.S.
