Ethan Hawke joins Marvel's Moon Knight series

The Marvel Cinematic Universe just gained a new member.

EW has learned that the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight has cast Ethan Hawke in an unspecified role. Oscar Isaac is already in talks to star as the show's hero, Marc Spector, a mercenary-turned-vigilante who struggles with dissociative identity disorder and gains superpowers after he becomes a conduit for an Egyptian moon god.

Details about Hawke's role are unknown, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, he may be playing the show's main villain. Marvel declined to comment.

Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy) is writing the show, with Mohamed Diab, Justin Benson, and Aaron Moorhead directing. Moon Knight is one of about a dozen new projects Marvel Studios has in the pipeline for Disney+, focusing on new heroes and familiar faces from the big-screen MCU films. WandaVision, Marvel's first such show, debuted Friday, while 2021 will also see the release of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...?, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye.

A four-time Oscar nominee, Hawke most recently starred in the Showtime miniseries The Good Lord Bird, which he co-created.
