If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Builders FirstSource (NASDAQ:BLDR) Before It's Too Late

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Builders FirstSource (NASDAQ:BLDR). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Builders FirstSource Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Builders FirstSource has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a falcon taking flight, Builders FirstSource's EPS soared from US$1.91 to US$2.69, over the last year. That's a impressive gain of 40%.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Builders FirstSource maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 18% to US$8.6b. That's progress.

Are Builders FirstSource Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Builders FirstSource has a market capitalization of US$8.9b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$111m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Builders FirstSource with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b is about US$6.4m.

The Builders FirstSource CEO received US$5.0m in compensation for the year ending . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does Builders FirstSource Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

You can't deny that Builders FirstSource has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. If that's not enough, consider also that the CEO pay is quite reasonable, and insiders are well-invested alongside other shareholders. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Builders FirstSource look rather interesting indeed. Before you take the next step you should know about the 2 warning signs for Builders FirstSource that we have uncovered.

Although Builders FirstSource certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
