With EPS Growth And More, Dolby Laboratories (NYSE:DLB) Is Interesting

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Dolby Laboratories (NYSE:DLB). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Dolby Laboratories's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Over the last three years, Dolby Laboratories has grown EPS by 4.9% per year. While that sort of growth rate isn't amazing, it does show the business is growing.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Dolby Laboratories shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 16% to 22%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings, and revenue, over time. To see the actual numbers, click on the chart.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. To that end, right now and today, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for future Dolby Laboratories EPS 100% free.

Are Dolby Laboratories Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$6.6b company like Dolby Laboratories. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$1.6b. That equates to 24% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Very encouraging.

Does Dolby Laboratories Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One positive for Dolby Laboratories is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Once you've identified a business you like, the next step is to consider what you think it's worth. Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
