'End of an era': Don Lemon's CNN primetime show gets renamed 'Don Lemon Tonight'

Don Lemon's nighttime news slot is getting a makeover.

The CNN anchor announced Saturday that "CNN Tonight with Don Lemon" would be "no more" after more than five years on air. Saturday Lemon tweeted that his show is getting a new name next week: "Don Lemon Tonight."

" 'CNN Tonight with Don Lemon' is no more. I’ll be back on Monday with my newly named show 'Don Lemon Tonight'," he wrote.

Before the official announcement Lemon, 55, caused a stir on the internet after alluding to the change in a video on Twitter.

"Tonight I have an announcement about the show. Yep, (it's the) end of an era," Lemon said.

Fans of his show expressed concerns in the comments:

"What do you mean it's the last night? No way!! I watch you every night!," @LotWhitney wrote.

"I’m sad I love watching you and Chris. I wish you all the best with whatever is coming. I hope we will get to see you," wrote another user.

Another tweet read: "I hope you’re not leaving. Your show is the best."

Two hours later Lemon posted another video to assure viewers he would still be at the cable news network he has worked at since 2006.

"Everybody calm down, I didn't say I was leaving CNN. I just said 'it was the end of an era for CNN Tonight with Don Lemon'," he said. "So relax."

Another new era for the news personality is the latest CNN podcast with fellow CNN anchor Chris Cuomo. "The Handoff" was announced Tuesday and will feature the news duo chatting every week, unscripted, to "talk politics and get personal," according to the show's description.

Conversations between the two have drawn scrutiny in the past. In March, Cuomo faced backlash after saying he was "Black on the inside" after singing the theme song to the 1970s TV show "Good Times" during an on-air exchange with Lemon.

Lemon addressed the criticism toward his colleague.

"What I will say is that I'm sure that there were some people out there who took offense to it, and fine, that’s their prerogative," Lemon told USA TODAY. "But Chris is my friend, I know his heart, I know where he's coming from, and I know that it was a joke amongst friends."
