Emily Blunt will lead high-octane epic western The English for BBC One and Amazon.

The actress stars opposite Twilight actor Chaske Spencer in the drama set in the mythic mid-American landscape in the year of 1890, written and directed by Hugo Blick, whose credits include The Honourable Woman, Black Earth Rising and The Shadow Line.

The story follows Blunt's Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman who arrives into the new and wild landscape of the West to wreak revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Upon meeting Eli Whipp (Spencer), an ex-cavalry scout and member of the Pawnee Nation by birth, they join together and discover a shared history which must be defeated at all costs, if either of them are to survive.

Hugo Blick told the BBC: "The chance to make a Western with Emily Blunt and the cast is so delicious I’m still wondering if it’s one of those weird dreams we were all having during lockdown. If not, a thrilling, romantic, epic horse-opera is heading to your screen sometime next year, and I couldn’t be more excited."

Blunt will also serve as executive producer alongside Blick and Greg Brenman.

Meanwhile, the star recently turned dismissed rumours that she and husband John Krasinski will be appearing in upcoming Marvel Fantastic Four film.

While appearing on Howard Stern's radio show, Blunt revealed she turned the role of Black Widow as she was filming Gulliver's Travels at the time.

When it came to the Fantastic Four, Blunt denied the reports as "fan-casting", explaining: "It's not that it's beneath me. I love Iron Man and when I got offered Black Widow I was obsessed with Iron Man. I wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr - it would've been amazing. But I don't know if superhero movies are for me. They're not up my alley. I don't like them. I really don't.

"It's been exhausted. We are inundated – it's not only all the movies, it's the endless TV shows as well. It's not to say that I'd never want to play [a superhero]. It would just have to be something so cool and a really cool character, and then I'd be interested."

The English is currently filming in Spain and further details will follow in due course.
