Eighties-themed restaurant ‘Only Food and Courses’ to open in Brixton shipping container

Mange tout, Rodney: the new launch will have nods to classic British sitcom Only Fools and Horses

(BBC)

A new fine-dining restaurant inspired by the food of the eighties and nineties is opening in a Brixton shipping container this December.

Only Food and Courses will launch on December 3 at Pop Brixton, and while the food is billed as high-end, the setting will be rather less so – rather than a Michelin look, the founders have modelled the 30ft space on a classic greasy spoon.

The new opening’s website promises “a brilliantly cheeky twist" on classic British dishes, elaborating: “from Caf’ clichés, to dinner party classics, and cocktails raided from your mum’s drinks cabinet, this is the best of British nostalgia delivered with the banter of a street market trader.”

Though not explicitly inspired by the sitcom Only Fools and Horses –besides the pun in the name and the market trader “banter” – Del Boy’s "most favouritist" meal, Duck à l'Orange, may pop up on the menu. There was no mention of mangetout.

Other dishes at the 28-seater site will include crab scotch eggs, pop tarts, lobster doughnuts and confit duck eclairs. Only Food and Courses will open from Wednesdays to Sundays serving a light brunch between midday and 5pm, with a choice of either a four or six course menu served in the evenings.

The concept comes from former Shard and Chelsea FC chef Robbie Lorraine, who said it was inspired by his adolescence.

“I’ve always had a vision for something like this so I’m really excited to be bringing it to life now,” Lorraine said. "Food brings back so many memories for people and I really enjoy tapping into some of these with some modern twists on things we used to eat.

“We live in strange times so I hope some of these warm memories of our childhood will give people some comfort! I can't wait to have a bit of fun with the menu.”
