Edmundston man gets 9-month jail sentence for insurance fraud

ATV driver in serious condition after Upper Tantallon crash

Stéphane Valcourt, 44, of Edmundston was sentenced to nine months in jail for fraud and forgery related to selling false life insurance plans and forging some of the documents.

Valcourt will serve two years probation as part of the sentence delivered Feb. 8 in Edmundston Provincial Court.

Cst. Isabelle Beaulieu said in a statement, Valcourt pleaded guilty to the charges on Dec. 1, 2015, stemming from allegations dating back to 2012.

According to Beaulieu, the RCMP's Financial Crime Unit received a complaint in December 2014 from the Financial and Consumer Services Commission.

The complaint said between Jan. 2012 and Dec. 2014, Valcourt had defrauded 10 victims by signing them up for life insurance and keeping their premium payments and that he forged some life insurance documents.

Police are asking the public to come forward if they have been the victim of this fraud, or any other type of fraud.
