Mini World Cup fields city's best soccer talent

Some of Edmonton's top soccer players will exchange their club team jerseys to represent their country of origin in the Mini World Cup which kicks off today.

Most of the players are first, second or third generation Canadians hailing from countries all across the globe.

The amateur tournament runs March 26- April 9 at the Edmonton South Soccer Centre, featuring the city's best adult amateur indoor soccer players playing for their heritage countries.

CBC will host and livestream the final match on cbc.ca/edmonton at 6:30 on April 9th.

"I'm thrilled that CBC Edmonton has gotten behind soccer to demonstrate that we share this city's passion for the game," said Judy Piercey, managing director.

"We've been a supporter of the Mini World Cup since 2007. I'm proud to be part of an annual tradition that supports grassroots soccer and connects Edmontonians through their love of the game."

Gareth Hampshire will have the call once again, with Min Dhariwal doing the colour and Lisa MacGregor reporting from field side.

The event, organized by Edmonton District Soccer Association, consists of four categories: Men’s (16+), Women’s (16+), Legends (men 45+), and Vintage (women 45+).
