EcoSynthetix's (TSE:ECO) investors will be pleased with their respectable 68% return over the last five years

When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. For example, long term EcoSynthetix Inc. (TSE:ECO) shareholders have enjoyed a 68% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 26% (not including dividends).

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

Because EcoSynthetix made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over the last half decade EcoSynthetix's revenue has actually been trending down at about 4.5% per year. Even though revenue hasn't increased, the stock actually gained 11%, per year, during the same period. It's probably worth checking other factors such as the profitability, to try to understand the share price action. It may not be reflecting the revenue.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 1.6% in the last year, EcoSynthetix shareholders lost 30%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 11% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand EcoSynthetix better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for EcoSynthetix that you should be aware of before investing here.
