The stunned "Bachelorette" star was the Mirrorball Trophy winner for the reality dance competition's 29th season, guided by pro dancer Artem Chigvintsev in his first championship.
The reality show veteran Bristowe, who didn't find lasting love on "The Bachelor" or on her 2015 season of "The Bachelorette" (she spilt with fiancé Shawn Booth in 2018), landed her complete, jubilant ending while boyfriend Jason Tartick hollered just as loud popping champagne while watching at home.
"I kind of blacked out there for a little bit," Bristowe told USA TODAY over Zoom while discussing her win with Chigvintsev, the Mirrorball Trophy propped behind the duo. Bristowe did her best to recollect the moment.
'Dancing With the Stars' finale:: Stunned 'Bachelorette' Kaitlyn Bristowe takes the Mirrorball Trophy
Question: Congratulations! That was quite a victory holler at the end, what was going through your mind?
Kaitlyn Bristowe: I just completely forgot I was mic'ed up. You just never know what name they're going to call. So when (host Tyra Banks) said our names, I completely blacked out. I think I broke Artem's eardrums because I screamed so loud. And I asked my boyfriend, did that come across on TV? And he was like, 'I don't know. I was screaming too loud to hear anything.'
Q: Jason celebrated just as loud with his champagne-spraying Instagram post.
Bristowe: Nobody celebrates quite like Jason Tartick, whether it's a football game or my success. He's just such a happy-go-lucky guy who celebrates wins in life, small or big. So he's spraying champagne on Instagram. He's screaming, he's yelling. Classic Jason.
Q: You have already decided the trophy is going in your "lady lounge." What's that?
Bristowe: My lady lounge is something I'm so proud of since I bought my house a couple of years ago. I did this one room that's so girly. It's got this flower wallpaper. It's pink and black with fluffy chairs. I work from there. I started my wine label there, I record my (Off The Vine) podcast there. Now I will put my Mirrorball Trophy there. It's just my room where I go in and feel proud of myself.
Q: You have ever reason to be proud. But you had some sleepless nights before the finals. You good now?
Bristowe: It was nerves, excitement, stress, pride. It was everything going on through my head. The night before, especially, I kept waking up. It was like Christmas morning. Like, I need to get there. What if I miss my alarm? I was having nightmares that I didn't make it. It was just a whole thing.
Q: Are there actual 'DWTS' specific nightmares?
Bristowe: I have a had quite a few. I forget my shoes, or I forget the choreography mid-dance or that I miss an alarm. Those are my three reoccurring nightmares.
Q: For a ballroom show, you had a show-altering ankle injury and then a rib injury this week. What's the status?
The ankle is OK. The rib is not OK. This corset it is holding it in nicely. Everybody on the show knows how physically demanding it is. It's a whole thing. Injuries happen. But as long as you can dance through them, we're OK.
Q: It seems reports that Jason would propose to you at the end of the show did not pan out, or did they?
Bristowe: I think you guys are looking for some good headlines. I know Jason, and if he planned that for tonight, he's definitely rescheduling. Because he's like, 'Well, everyone's already talking about it.'
Q: Your pro dance partner Artem is a new father to baby Mateo, has that inspired you for a new chapter?
Bristowe: I always tell Artem that he gives me baby fever. Have you seen his baby? He's the cutest freaking baby. So alert and aware and adorable. My baby fever was already off the charts. And then seeing Mateo, I'm like, game over.
