Yahoo Finance Duffy calls for Netflix to remove controversial 365 Days film
Duffy has criticised Netflix over its "irresponsible" streaming of film 365 Days. The Welsh singer said that the movie glamorises "the brutal reality of sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape", in a letter to Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings.
"This should not be anyone's idea of entertainment, nor should it be described as such," said Duffy, who recently revealed harrowing details of her own kidnapping and rape ordeal.
365 Days follows the story of a young Polish woman who is kidnapped by a Sicilian gangster, who gives her a year to fall in love with him. It's based on a trilogy of books, 365 dni, by Polish author Blanka Lipińska.
Netflix said that it will not remove the film, which carries warnings, reports the BBC. Since landing on the streaming service earlier this year, it's quickly become one of the platform's most popular films, regularly featuring in its 'Top 10' list. Billed as an "erotic drama", the movie has received terrible reviews from critics. The Guardian described it as "the Netflix softcore porn film that people can't stop watching".
"It grieves me that Netflix provides a platform for such 'cinema', that eroticises kidnapping and distorts sexual violence and trafficking as a 'sexy' movie," wrote Duffy.
"I just can't imagine how Netflix could overlook how careless, insensitive, and dangerous this is. It has even prompted some young women, recently, to jovially ask Michele Morrone, the lead actor in the film, to kidnap them.
"We all know Netflix would not host material glamorising paedophilia, racism, homophobia, genocide, or any other crimes against humanity. The world would rightly rise up and scream.
"Tragically, victims of trafficking and kidnapping are unseen, and yet in 365 Days their suffering is made into an 'erotic drama', as described by Netflix."
A petition has also been launched on Change.org, calling for the film to be removed for "perpetuating the glamorisation of rape culture".
Actor Michele Morrone confirmed earlier this week that production has already started on a sequel, according to the BBC.
In April, Duffy bravely revealed details about a terrifying four-week ordeal during which she was kidnapped, raped and taken to a foreign country. She wrote a lengthy account of her experience, explaining why she disappeared from public life, in the hope that it will "help others who have suffered the same".
She wrote: "It was my birthday, I was drugged at a restaurant, I was drugged then for four weeks and travelled to a foreign country. I can’t remember getting on the plane and came round in the back of a travelling vehicle. I was put into a hotel room and the perpetrator returned and raped me. I remember the pain and trying to stay conscious in the room after it happened. I was stuck with him for another day, he didn’t look at me, I was to walk behind him, I was somewhat conscious and withdrawn."
