Dubai has added another superlative to its belt: it is now officially home to the world’s biggest fountain.

Measuring 7,327sqm, the Palm Fountain at Nakheel Malls has been confirmed as setting a new world record by Guinness World Records.

As well as offering sheer size, the fountain also has a number of bells and whistles to elevate it to the status of tourist attraction in its own right.

Jets blast water up to 105m into the air at the waterside location, while more than 3,000 multi-coloured LEDs produce striking visual effects.

Shoots of water also move in time with songs played from around the world.

Set in The Pointe at Palm Jumeirah, the fountain had its own opening ceremony, complete with DJs, dance shows and a fireworks display.

“GWR is delighted to officially see The Palm Fountain breaking the title of the Largest fountain,” Shaddy Gaad, a senior marketing manager for Guinness World Records said.

“This fountain is an example of another milestone in Dubai’s architectural achievements and we are excited to declare it Officially Amazing.”

It is far from being the United Arab Emirate’s first record-breaking accolade.

In fact, Dubai holds around 220 World Records, including world’s tallest building, in the form of Burj Khalifa at 828m; the city with the most buildings over 300m; and the world’s biggest indoor ski slope.

Stranger titles include the highest tennis court, largest chocolate mosaic and fastest police car in service.

And, proving that finding a niche is never a bad thing, the Emirate also takes the prize for world’s biggest building in the shape of a picture frame – the Dubai Frame stands at 150m tall and 95m wide.
