Driver ‘gone before my baby even landed’ in fatal hit-and-run, California mom says

Walking home with her children after youth football practice Tuesday night, California mom Sarah Andrews saw a car roaring toward them at more than 60 mph.

“I barely pulled my younger one out of the way, and I went back to reach for Lawrence, but he wasn’t there,” Andrews told KABC. “He was gone.”

Lawrence Andrews, 14, died after being struck by the driver, who sped away, at 8:10 p.m. near James Woody Park in Apple Valley, north of San Bernardino, KTLA reported.

“The car was gone before my baby even landed,” Sarah Andrews told KABC.

The 14-year-old had just finished helping coach his younger brother’s youth football team at the park, KNBC reported. He was a football standout himself, said his father, Lawrence Andrews,

“He was a very good football player,” his father told KABC. “I saw him going somewhere, and it just hurts to see that he’s not ever going to be here again.”

The crash took place on Ottawa Road, between Navajo Road and Manhasset Road, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release.

Investigators are seeking a white or silver two-door coupe, possibly a Nissan 350Z or Infiniti G35, in connection with the hit-and-run, the release said.

The teen played as a sophomore on the Apple Valley High School junior varsity football team, which said in an Instagram post that his “laughter, sincerity, grit, and passion for football, family, and friends will truly be missed.”

Authorities ask that anyone with information contact the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station at 760-240-7400.
