Does Pathfinder Bancorp (NASDAQ:PBHC) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Pathfinder Bancorp (NASDAQ:PBHC), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Quickly Is Pathfinder Bancorp Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. It certainly is nice to see that Pathfinder Bancorp has managed to grow EPS by 29% per year over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. I note that Pathfinder Bancorp's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Pathfinder Bancorp maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 31% to US$45m. That's progress.

In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings, and revenue, over time. For finer detail, click on the image.

Pathfinder Bancorp isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of US$116m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Pathfinder Bancorp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Pathfinder Bancorp shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have US$17m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Those holdings account for over 15% of the company; visible skin in the game.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations under US$200m, like Pathfinder Bancorp, the median CEO pay is around US$724k.

The Pathfinder Bancorp CEO received US$372k in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does Pathfinder Bancorp Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, Pathfinder Bancorp's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. If you need more convincing beyond that EPS growth rate, don't forget about the reasonable remuneration and the high insider ownership. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Pathfinder Bancorp look rather interesting indeed. Don't forget that there may still be risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Pathfinder Bancorp that you should be aware of.
