Does First Quantum Minerals (TSE:FM) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in First Quantum Minerals (TSE:FM). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

First Quantum Minerals' Improving Profits

First Quantum Minerals has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. First Quantum Minerals boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from US$1.21 to US$1.51, in the last year. That's a 25% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. On the one hand, First Quantum Minerals' EBIT margins fell over the last year, but on the other hand, revenue grew. If EBIT margins are able to stay balanced and this revenue growth continues, then we should see brighter days ahead.

Are First Quantum Minerals Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of First Quantum Minerals, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$242m. This comes in at 1.0% of shares in the company, which is a fair amount of a business of this size. This should still be a great incentive for management to maximise shareholder value.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to First Quantum Minerals, with market caps over US$8.0b, is around US$8.7m.

The CEO of First Quantum Minerals only received US$3.8m in total compensation for the year ending December 2022. That's clearly well below average, so at a glance that arrangement seems generous to shareholders and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does First Quantum Minerals Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

As previously touched on, First Quantum Minerals is a growing business, which is encouraging. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for First Quantum Minerals, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for First Quantum Minerals you should be aware of.
