We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Palamina Corp. (CVE:PA).

What Is Insider Buying?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Have Palamina Insiders Traded Recently?

We saw some Palamina insider buying shares in the last three months. Andrew Thomson bought CA$13k worth of shares in that time. However, Director Hugh Agro netted CA$240 for sales. While it's good to see the insider buying, the net amount bought isn't enough for us to gain much confidence from it.

Does Palamina Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. From our data, it seems that Palamina insiders own 12% of the company, worth about CA$1.2m. Whilst better than nothing, we're not overly impressed by these holdings.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Palamina Insiders?

Our data shows a little insider buying, but no selling, in the last three months. The net investment is not enough to encourage us much. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening. The transactions are fine but it'd be more encouraging if Palamina insiders bought more shares in the company.
