Did You Manage To Avoid Two Harbors Investment's (NYSE:TWO) Devastating 74% Share Price Drop?

For many, the main point of investing is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But even the best stock picker will only win with some selections. At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in Two Harbors Investment Corp. (NYSE:TWO), since the last five years saw the share price fall 74%. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 59% over the last twelve months. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 64% in a month. But this could be related to poor market conditions -- stocks are down 31% in the same time.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Two Harbors Investment moved from a loss to profitability. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

The most recent dividend was actually lower than it was in the past, so that may have sent the share price lower.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Two Harbors Investment the TSR over the last 5 years was -44%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Two Harbors Investment shareholders are down 54% for the year (even including dividends) . Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 17%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 11% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Two Harbors Investment better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Two Harbors Investment (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
