Did Debbie Harry Buy and Quickly Sell a Rural Retreat in Connecticut?

SELLER: Debbie Harry
LOCATION: Roxbury, CT
PRICE: $810,000
SIZE: 2,685 square feet, 3-4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Though the various property record databases and other online resources we perused are more than just a mite perplexing it looks like Debbie Harry sold a rural retreat near the scenic and historic Connecticut community of Roxbury for $785,000 even though it appears she’d only purchased the property six months earlier for $625,000. For the record, the New York Post reported last week Miz Harry purchased the property for $785,000 but all the property record databases we peeped indicate the bucolic retreat was acquired by the septuagenarian new wave pioneer in early June (2016) for $625,000. A separate transaction, apparently for the same property, was recorded three weeks later in the amount of $185,000 with Miz Harry as the buyer but it’s unclear why there are two transactions three weeks apart and/or if there were actually two parcels involved in the deal.

Whether Miz Harry is in fact the seller or the buyer — Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Bueller? — digital marketing materials from when the house was available on the open market in September and October (2016), first at $849,000 and then at $825,000, show the 3.47-acre mostly wooded property sits down a dirt lane and includes an updated 2,685-square-foot clapboard-sided saltbox-style residence that dates to 1795 and is configured with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. According to floor plans we turned up, the unexpectedly large and loft-like if low-ceilinged combination living/dining room measures 28-feet wide and 32-feet long and features a fireplace, rustic exposed wood beams, vintage wide plank wood floors, and French doors that open to a stone patio. At nearly 20-feet long the adjacent kitchen, jazzed up with slab marble counter tops, up-to-date stainless steel designer appliances and a vaulted ceiling with exposed wood beams, is certainly large enough to accommodate a good-sized dining table but none-the-less looks a wee bit skimpy on counter space. A handful of steps down from the kitchen, an expansive service area incorporates a double-windowed and unusually spacious half bathroom for guests, an over-sized laundry room that does double duty as a pantry, and a brick-floored screened porch. A small lofted area on top of the powder and laundry rooms is accessible by a forbiddingly narrow staircase.

Just off the living room, the main floor master suite encompasses a sitting room with fireplace and a slightly compact bedroom that benefits from three windows and a vaulted ceiling while the updated bathroom has a stone-tiled shower and built-in linen and toiletries cabinet. Upstairs there is one small bedroom, one huge bedroom easily and inexpensively divided into two, and a roomy, renovated bathroom with pedestal sink and black and white honeycomb tile floor. The largely untamed and thickly wooded grounds include picturesque rolling lawns, several flagstone terraces and pathways, rustic stacked stone walls, and a detached two-car garage.

Our research suggests Miz Harry, indisputably a pop culture icon and music industry legend who has appeared in dozens of films like “Hairspray” and, more recently, a brief turn through the deliciously sharp-tongued Hulu comedy “Difficult People,” continues to own a 2,926 square foot house on 2.9 acres along the shore of the Navesink River in Red Bank, NJ, that she picked up in May 2003 for exactly $1 million. She also maintains a modestly sized two-unit combination condo in a gigantic apartment complex in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood — the very same apartment complex this property gossip once lived — that was scooped up per property records in December 2007 for $580,000.
