Dexter star Julie Benz has spoken about the possibility of her character Rita Morgan appearing in the show's upcoming revival series.

Long-time Dexter fans will be aware that Dexter Morgan's wife Rita was murdered by the Trinity Killer during the show's fourth season in 2009, but of course that doesn't necessarily mean that she couldn't make some kind of appearance in the new series.

But actress Benz has told TVLine that she doesn't personally feel Rita would be a necessary addition to any new episodes of the show, explaining that she doesn't think Dexter would need to see her.

"I think Dexter has moved way past Rita," she said. "It doesn't make sense for her to be on his mind as a ghost because she was only his cover. He didn't internalise her, so there are no plans for Rita to show up.

"I would obviously do it in a heartbeat if they asked. But I've always said Rita shouldn't make an appearance in his head because she didn't know the real him. She didn't know the Dark Passenger."

Benz added that fans often compare her to her character, joking that she isn't as "nice" as Rita.

"People on social media who fell in love with Rita approach me like I'm her," she said. "And I have to say, 'Oh no! I'm not that nice.'"

It was confirmed in October 2020 that Michael C Hall will be reprising his role as Dexter in a new ten-episode limited series to air later this year in the US.

Joining the cast will be Once Upon a Time star Jamie Chung, The Mandalorian's Julia Jones and Jane the Virgin actor Alano Miller.

We don't yet have specific plot details but the official synopsis reads: "Set 10 years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami."

The new Dexter is expected to premiere later this year on Showtime in the US.
