Two years after it was announced, the sequel to Detective Pikachu seems to have been scrapped.

In a recent interview with Inverse, actor Justice Smith, who starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in the 2019 original, opened up about his feelings on whether a follow-up might still be on the cards.

"I would love to participate in Detective Pikachu 2," he said, but added: "I don't know if it's going to happen.

"I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don't think it's going to happen. I really hope so though. Honestly, I'm such a huge fan, who knows, who knows? I hope so."

The last we heard about the sequel was actually before Detective Pikachu even came out. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Legendary Pictures hired 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox writer Oren Uziel to work on the script for the second film.

At the time, we theorised that a post-credits scene might tease a sequel, but since there was no post-credits scene, there weren't any unanswered questions that would have justified it.

The movie featured Ryan Reynolds voicing the iconic Pokémon who teamed up with a human teenager (Smith) to solve a mystery surrounding the latter's missing father, and a wider threat to their world.

Only time will tell whether the second film happens or not.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is available to purchase on Amazon Prime Video.
