Despite currently being unprofitable, Inotiv (NASDAQ:NOTV) has delivered a 670% return to shareholders over 5 years

Inotiv, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOTV) shareholders might understandably be very concerned that the share price has dropped 43% in the last quarter. But that doesn't undermine the fantastic longer term performance (measured over five years). In that time, the share price has soared some 670% higher! So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 57% decline over the last twelve months. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

Although Inotiv has shed US$77m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

Inotiv wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last 5 years Inotiv saw its revenue grow at 46% per year. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Fortunately, the market has not missed this, and has pushed the share price up by 50% per year in that time. Despite the strong run, top performers like Inotiv have been known to go on winning for decades. On the face of it, this looks lke a good opportunity, although we note sentiment seems very positive already.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Inotiv will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Inotiv shareholders are down 57% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 20%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 50% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should learn about the 4 warning signs we've spotted with Inotiv (including 2 which shouldn't be ignored) .
