Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented on Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole seeking to have MP Derek Sloan expelled from caucus after accepting a donation from a white supremacist.

“Political parities need to remain vigilant, particularly in the wake of what we’ve seen the the United States, from the infiltration of the active presence of fringe or extremist or violent or unacceptable or intolerant elements, and that’s something that we constantly need to work towards as all politicians in Canada,” Trudeau said.

“Which is incidentally why the Liberal party has been calling for Erin O’Toole to remove Derek Sloan from caucus for many, many months now, following a number of unacceptable comments that he has made. We are pleased that Erin O’Toole has finally decided to take leadership and we’ll see how that unfolds.”

Sloan has argued that the $131 donation from Paul Fromm, made in August 2020, was processed without his campaign or the Conservative Party “realizing that who had made the donation,” and he did not hear anything from the party about the donation after the fact.

“When the problematic donation was brought to my attention, I immediately asked CPC Executive Director to refund the donation,” Sloan wrote on social media.

In a statement on Monday evening, O’Toole said that Sloan accepting the donation is “far worse than a gross error of judgement or failure of due diligence.”

“Racism is a disease of the soul, repugnant to our core values. It has no place in our country. It has no place in the Conservative Party of Canada. I won’t tolerate it.”

This is not the first time Sloan has come under fire, back in December 2020 the Conservative MP supported an e-petition that suggests the COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed to Canadians without the proper safety protocols, with the petition calling the vaccine as “effectively human experimentation.”
