Delta flight 446 to Iceland diverted to Happy Valley-Goose Bay

A Delta Airlines flight travelling from New York City to Reykjavik, Iceland, made an unscheduled stop in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Wednesday.

Flight 446, carrying 183 passengers, stopped at Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay for more than eight hours Wednesday after landing at the base at about 4 a.m. ET.

The plane eventually left the runway at about 1:30 p.m. ET.

Passenger Gideon Black said the plane made an emergency landing due to a fuel shortage, however a statement on the Delta website said the flight was diverted due to deteriorating weather conditions in Iceland.

"An alternate flight crew is being flown in to continue the flight," the company wrote.

"Customers have been provided refreshments and egress opportunities while on the ground in Goose Bay, and will be offered a gesture of service recovery."

One passenger tweeted they were not allowed off the plane, but took photos and video from a stairway from the plane that showed the Happy Valley-Goose Bay airport.

"Muffins and pasta salad is all we had in over 10 hours on Delta 446," Black tweeted.

The flight resumed its flight to Iceland, after having left JFK International Airport in New York at 9:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
