CVS and Walgreens Are Betting Big on the Future of Cannabis Demand

HOUSTON, TX / ACCESSWIRE / April 3, 2019 / Cannabis has already disrupted alcohol, cigarettes, food, pharmaceuticals, and the global wellness industry. Even major retailers are jumping on board, seeing incredible opportunities for industry growth.

Neiman Marcus is pushing ahead with CBD sales at some of its stores and online. Simon Property Group is partnering with Green Growth Brands to open 108 stores in its malls just in 2019. Barney's will launch "The High End."

Now, one of the largest drugstores in the U.S. is selling cannabis products, too. CVS will carry a line of CBD products in eight states, including California, Illinois, Colorado, and Alabama.

Even Walgreen's will sell CBD products, including creams, patches, and sprays in 1,500 stores.

"This product offering is in line with our efforts to provide a wider range of accessible health and wellbeing products and services to best meet the needs and preferences of our customers," Walgreens spokesman Brian Faith told CNBC.

As demand for cannabis products intensifies, some of biggest beneficiaries include Pure Global Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: PURE) (OTC PINK: PRCNF), Cresco Labs Inc. (CSE: CL)(OTC: CRLBF), and Aleafia Health (TSXV: ALEF)(OTC: ALEAF).

Pure Global Cannabis' (PURE)(PRCNF) through its wholly-owned subsidiary PureSinse Inc., just announced it signed a merchant agreement with BuyWell Corp, a wholly-owned and operated subsidiary of Evergreen Pacific Insurance Corp. to sell PureSinse's premium and selected medical cannabis products on the BuyWell Care marketplace.

"BuyWell Care is an important partnership in supporting our medical cannabis business goals. We carried out a soft launch of our site mid-January after receiving our Health Canada sales license," says Malay Panchal, President and CEO of Pure Global. "This allowed us to test our systems to ensure it can handle larger volumes in the coming months. PureSinse now offers same day shipping within the Greater Toronto Area. With this we look to become the preferred premium cannabis provider for BuyWell clients and all medical cannabis patients by offering the best service and best cannabis products possible."

"Pure Global and Evergreen Pacific are both patient-focused organizations in pursuit of improving the health and wellness of Canadians and making a positive difference in each patient's lives. This agreement creates an immediate sales channel for PureSinse connecting medical patients who seek premium quality medical cannabis from a licensed producer that is focused on patient care."

Cresco Labs Inc. (CL)(CRLBF) is betting big on the California cannabis market with a C$1.1 billion acquisition of Origin House. The deal will create a premiere distribution company that will serve the largest cannabis market in the world, California.

"[The deal] establishes Cresco Labs as the leading multi-state operator with one of the largest distribution platforms in California, which is projected to be a $7.7 billion cannabis market in 2022 by Arcview Market Research/BDS Analytics," said Cresco Chief Executive and Co-founder Charlie Bachtel, as quoted by MarketWatch. "Following the closing of this acquisition, Cresco brands will be in over 725 dispensaries across the country, giving us the largest and most strategic distribution footprint of any cannabis company in the United States."

Aleafia Health Inc. (ALEF)(ALEAF) recently acquired Emblem Corporation in an all-stock deal valued at $173.2 million. The company's Canabo Medical Clinic and Emblem's GrowWise Health will combine and now serve nearly 60,000 patients with 40 national medical clinics.

"The Emblem acquisition rapidly accelerates the execution of Aleafia's strategy to become a vertically integrated, diversified cannabis company. It is difficult to overstate the significance of securing the highest quality medicine for our patients and Aleafia," said Aleafia Health CEO Geoffrey Benic. "Emblem's product leadership in the medical and adult-use sectors and highly coveted supply agreements will perfectly complement Aleafia's cannabis production and clinic operations. This is a transformative transaction."
