Crews battle a raging forest fire at Pilot Mountain State Park in North Carolina

Crews are battling a large forest fire at Pilot Mountain State Park in North Carolina.

“Park units” responded to the scene and were “in the process of gaining access to the fire,” as of the evening of Saturday, Nov. 27, according to a Facebook post from the Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department. Roughly 50 firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the blaze.

The fire department posted later that night that all county volunteer firefighters had “demobilized for the night” and that crews from the North Carolina Forest Service and Pilot Mountain State Park were remaining on the scene.

The fire had burned nearly 180 acres as of the early afternoon on Sunday, Nov. 28, according to a Facebook post from North Carolina State Parks and Recreation.

The park’s campground was evacuated “without any injuries or damages,” the fire department said.

All park accesses remain closed until further notice, according to the park.

The park was still closed Nov. 28 and will likely be closed all week due to the fire, North Carolina State Parks and Recreation said. The public should stay away from the area.

Photos posted to social media showed the blaze on the mountain.

The Surry County Association of Rescue Squads reminded the public to not try to get pictures from the fire and to not fly any drones in the area.

“As always please allow emergency services to do their jobs and please stay clear of any dangerous areas,” it wrote.

The fire department said officials don’t yet know what caused the fire.

“This is an ever changing fire and we will try to keep the community as updated as possible,” it wrote.

Pilot Mountain State Park is located in Surry and Yadkin counties, about 100 miles north of Charlotte.
