COVID-19: UK records 10,476 new cases and further 11 deaths, latest daily figures show

The UK has recorded another 10,476 coronavirus infections and a further 11 deaths in the latest 24-hour period.

That compares to 11,007 new cases yesterday and 19 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test.

Last Friday, 8,125 new infections were reported, along with 17 deaths.

There were 243,978 first vaccinations administered yesterday according to official government figures, taking the total to 42,460,632 - 80.6% of the adult population.

The number of people now fully vaccinated is 30,898,467 - 58.7% of adults - after 223,260 second jabs were delivered.

England's R number remains unchanged at between 1.2 and 1.4, according to latest estimates.

The weekly figure - produced by the scientific advisory panel SAGE - was at the same position seven days ago.

R represents the average number of people each person with COVID-19 goes on to infect, so every 10 people this week will infect approximately 12-14 others.

The Delta variant now accounts for almost all of the UK's coronavirus cases, according to Public Health England.

Some 33,630 cases of the mutation were recorded in the last week and PHE said "the most recent data show 99% of sequenced and genotyped cases across the country are the Delta variant".

Last week, it made up 90% of COVID cases across the UK.

Meanwhile, AstraZeneca and the EU have both claimed victory in a court ruling over the supply of COVID vaccines.
