Walmart and Target Recall Frozen Veggies for Listeria Risk

From Good Housekeeping

Update, June 27, 2016: Target and Walmart are the latest major retailers to recall frozen veggies for a potential listeria contamination.

National Frozen Foods Corporation, which packages vegetables for Target's Market Pantry and Walmart's Great Value brands, issued the warning last week. The products in question include a variety of frozen peas and mixed veggies purchased between September and June. You can return any of the affected products for a complete refund at the place of purchase, and check the FDA website for more details.

Update, May 4, 2016: After seven people fell severely ill from listeria infections, CRF Frozen Foods is expanding its recall to include 358 products sold at major chains like Costco, Trader Joe's and Safeway.

According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all seven people were hospitalized and two later died, although listeria was not listed as the cause of death for either one.

The recently-added products include broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, edamame, green beans, potatoes, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, but read the FDA notice for a complete list. "We apologize for any concern or inconvenience this expanded recall has caused our customers and consumers who enjoy our products," CRF stated.

Original Story, April 25, 2016: Before you make dinner tonight, take a quick look at your freezer. A frozen foods distributer is recalling 15 products sold in more than 30 states and four Canadian provinces after testing positive for listeria.

CRF Frozen Foods sells vegetables at Costco, Meijer and other stores under the brand names Schwans, True Goodness by Meijer, Wellsley Farms Organic and Organic by Nature. The affected products include organic peas, sweet corn and vegetable medleys, but for the complete list, check the FDA notice.

Consumers can return the products for a refund but at the very least are encouraged to throw them away. While no illnesses have been reported yet, listeria can lead to serious and sometimes deadly infections, especially in children or the elderly. Potential symptoms include fever, headaches, nausea and diarrhea.

Don't forget to tell your friends and family about the latest listeria outbreak - especially if they belong to Costco. People looking for more information can call 1-844-551-5595 or read CRF Frozen Food's entire statement.
