Connexion Works offers collaborative working space in Saint John

A new space in uptown Saint John is changing the way businesses work.

Connexion Works is offering a collaborative work space where businesses and entrepreneurs can work together to grow.

The business offers monthly memberships and it gives entrepreneurs access to services, such as private and open workspaces, conference rooms, smartboards and writable walls.

Connexion Works has had 12 companies working out of the space, some with multiple employees, since opening in January. There has also been many others who have purchased one-time memberships.

Mark Breen runs a program called Venture Garage through Enterprise Saint John and is a member.

He says the city has been long overdue for this type of collaborative working space.

"When somebody comes up with an idea, a lot of people will tell them they're crazy. So it can be very lonely," said Breen.

"So being around other people that are working on other ideas it can help. Just that networking, kind of bonding and camaraderie that's generated is really valuable."

Connexion Works is using 6,000 square feet of its space on the third floor of the Brunswick Square office tower.

Sharon Rathod, the facility director, says there's more room to fill.

"The whole space is about 17,000 square feet. But our vision is to at least get to 10,000 square feet so we can do everything that we envisioned to be … really expand the opportunities for many people to come in and feel a part of the community," Rathod said.

Right now, the community consists of businesses doing everything from IT to graphics.

Connexion Works hopes to have its space finished by the end of the year. It is also hosting a public open house next week.
