Chicago P.D. spoilers follow.

Chicago P.D. star Marina Squerciati has revealed that the show's current season will end in a cliffhanger as it continues to explore the subject of police reform onscreen.

Ahead of season eight's penultimate episode airing in the US on Wednesday, May 12, the actor, who plays intelligence detective Kim Burgess, praised the writers for "doing a really great job in these last two to show the old school cop struggling and the changes that need to be made".

"I think that not mentioning it or dealing with it on the show would be irresponsible," she told TVLine. "[Showrunner Rick Eid] has brought it to the forefront, so it's important that we do address it. It's not perfect, but we are addressing it… It would be hard to turn a blind eye to all the things that are happening right now."

The storyline kicked off earlier this season, when Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller (played by Nicole Ari Parker) was introduced to the force.

Since then, the character has pushed for reform, including the punishment of an officer who murdered a young black man at a routine traffic stop and insisting the team go by the books when it comes to their investigative work.

Elsewhere, Squerciati opened up about Burgess' decision to ask Adam Rusek to be named custodial guardian of her newly adopted daughter Makayla, which means he would become responsible for the youngster if anything were to happen Burgess on duty.

"I think the balancing aspect of being a working mom will always be present," Squerciati noted. "In order to be a mom cop, you have to leave that behind when you walk into the fire so I think that naming the guardian was a way to put that fear to bed.

"Not naming the guardian and having someone to fall back on was what made her hesitate in the line of fire."

Chicago PD airs on NBC in the US, and on Universal, 5USA and Sky Witness in the UK.
