Chevy COPO Camaro Drag Racer Tested At The Strip: Video

Attention all you devotees of the 1,320-foot stretch of asphalt. A new factory-built mean machine is heading your way. It's the 2016 Chevrolet COPO Camaro drag racer, and it looks to be bringing serious heat. The car was recently sent over to a drag strip for testing, and it managed to rip off an 8.99-second run.

This Camaro comes packing a 427 cubic-inch LSX V-8 engine, and it pairs that mill with a three-speed automatic gearbox. Out back, a pair of drag slicks sit at the end of a solid rear axle. Apparently, this isn't even the fastest engine that GM will offer with this singularly focused straight-line racer. According to TorqueNews, a supercharged 350 cubic-inch engine will be available and it will be the fastest of the bunch. It will dip far lower into the eight-second range with that forced induction lump under the hood.

If you're looking to run the Bow-Tie brand in your local NHRA Stock and Super Stock Eliminator classes, you'll have to act fast. Chevy is building just 69 examples of the COPO Camaro drag car.

What impresses us most about that video above? No, it's not the excellent noise and tremendous speed, but rather the places the video team was able to stick GoPros. Those driveshaft and engine-bay shots were awesome, and we may have to pay homage to them in our own videos in the near future.
