Charmed's Alyssa Milano opens up about relationship with Shannen Doherty

Charmed's Alyssa Milano has explained that her relationship with former co-star Shannen Doherty is "cordial" now, following years of tension.

In the fantasy drama's original series, which ran between 1998 and 2006, the pair played witch sisters Phoebe and Prue Halliwell alongside Holly Marie-Combs' Piper.

While the fictional siblings got along most of the time – bickers about haphazard spellcasting aside – the actors themselves famously didn't see eye-to-eye. Doherty left the show when Prue was killed by Shax, a demonic assassin, as part of season three's dramatic finale.

Later that year, in 2001, she claimed that she'd quit because "there was too much drama on the set and not enough passion for the work".

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Milano got candid about that difficult time in her career, stating: "I could take responsibility for a lot of our tension that we had. I think a lot of our struggle came from feeling that I was in competition rather than it being that sisterhood that the show was so much about. I have some guilt about my part in that."

The 48 year old, whose new book Sorry Not Sorry has just been released, also revealed that she reached out to Doherty on social media after the latter went public with her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015.

"I will send her DMs every couple of months to just check in," said Milano. "I have respect for her. Great actress, loves her family so much, and I just wish I could've felt strong enough in who I was to recognise that back then."

In 2018, The CW rebooted Charmed, with Valerie Cruz, Madeleine Mantock, Sarah Jeffery and Fruitvale Station's Melonie Diaz playing protagonists Marisol, Macy Maggie and Mel, respectively.

Alyssa Milano's new book Sorry Not Sorry is available to buy now.
