Charlotte residents can exchange plastic leaf bags for paper this weekend. Here’s how

·1 min read

The big plastic bags for leaves in your garage don’t have to go to waste.

Charlotte residents can exchange their plastic yard waste bags for kraft paper ones this weekend.

The City of Charlotte’s Solid Waste Services is hosting a free bag exchange Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1200 Otts St. The event comes during a transitional period for many residents who aren’t allowed to use plastic bags for yard wastebecause they’re no longer being accepted by the city for collection.

Residents who continue to use plastic bags could face a minimum fine of $150.

No more plastic bags for leaves, yard waste. Here’s what Charlotte residents can do.

Bringing plastics bags to the exchange isn’t necessary, the city said. Residents without plastic bags will be given 50 kraft paper bags.

Residents also can dispose of yard waste by taking the items in paper bags or reusable containers to one of Mecklenburg County’s four full-service recycling centers. Fees may be charged when disposing at these centers:

Foxhole Recycling Center: 17131 Lancaster Highway, Charlotte

North Mecklenburg Recycling Center: 12300 N. Statesville Road, Huntersville

Hickory Grove Recycling Center: 8007 Pence Road, Charlotte

Compost Central and Recycling Center: 140 Valleydale Road, Charlotte
