Charges laid in connection with rural arson

·1 min read

Charges have been laid against a Windsor woman in connection with a pair of fires at Charlotte’s Freedom Farm.

Chatham-Kent police announced Monday that Christine Rettig, 30, of Giardot Street, was arrested and charged with uttering threats, along with two counts of arson.

According to previous reports, emergency crews responded to a suspicious fire at the animal sanctuary located on Brook Line on July 1, 2020. Several animals died in the blaze, with damage to a barn set at $300,000.

Later in the year on Oct. 2, the owner of the farm received a threatening letter in the mailbox.

On June 20 of this year, emergency crews were again called to the farm, this time to extinguish a trailer fire. Damage was set at $15,000 and no animals were injured.

Rettig has been released from custody and is set to appear in court on Nov. 16.

According to previous posts on Charlotte’s Freedom Farm Facebook page and in published media reports, Rettig was cited as hero for her efforts in rescuing animals and property from both of the fires.
