Carrot recall 2021: Grimmway Farms recalls O Organics, Bunny-Luv carrots for possible salmonella contamination

Grimmway Farms is voluntarily recalling select carrot products for possible salmonella contamination.

According to the recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration website, six products are part of the recall under the brand names of Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, O Organics and Grimmway Farms.

The company, which is based in Bakersfield, California, said no illnesses have been linked to the recall to date.

Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps six hours to six days after being exposed to the bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.

A list of stores that sold the recalled carrots was unavailable.

Dana Brennan, Grimmway vice president of government and public affairs, said in a statement to USA TODAY that the company doesn't distribute directly to stores but to distribution centers.

"For that reason and out of an abundance of caution, we are making this a nationwide recall," Brennan said.

In a statement, Grimmway Farms President and CEO Jeff Huckaby said the recall was initiated as a result of a routine, internal company test.

In addition to the recalled items sold in stores, the company says it has “recalled certain shredded carrots and chopped (chunk) carrots that were sold to food manufacturers and food service distributors.”

Consumers who have the recalled product should not consume it and should destroy or discard it. For more information, call 1-800-301-3101, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
