Rookie Brett Smith will be Roughriders' quarterback in Edmonton

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are now looking beyond their quarterback insurance plan for insurance.

Quarterback Kevin Glenn is injured, so backup Brett Smith will make his first CFL start in Edmonton against the Eskimos on Friday.

Glenn suffered a torn pectoral in Sunday's home game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which the Riders lost 31-21. Saskatchewan is now 0-5. The team announced Glenn was added to the six-game injured list on Wednesday.

Glenn became the Riders' go-to quarterback after Darian Durant tore an Achilles tendon in the first game of the regular season a month ago. Durant is out for the season.

Third-string no more

Brett Smith has travelled an interesting road to get to this moment. He's gone from a bartender to starting quarterback in a year.

"At one point, I was serving beer last year," Smith said.

Smith joined the Riders in March after spending six weeks on the Toronto Argonauts practice roster the previous year.

The 23-year-old pivot played three seasons at the University of Wyoming before turning pro.

Despite the circumstances, Smith said this is a dream come true.

"I was torn," he said. "I was hoping for the best for Kevin. You know, he's a great leader and mentor to me, a great friend. So I was disappointed for him, but it's a part of the business man. You've got to be ready and I am."

Smith said he has a different mentality this week knowing he'll be the starter in Edmonton. He entered Sunday's game against Hamilton after Glenn was injured. He competed two of four passes for 12 yards.
