Born in the U.S.A.: 2019 Volvo S60 Revealed!

As goes the S60, so goes the V60. Well, that's the way it usually happens, but Volvo revealed its latest V60 luxury wagon almost four months ago, well ahead of its sedan counterpart. Now the 2019 Volvo S60 is here, and it marks the first redesign for the model in eight years. It's also the first Volvo ever to be built in the United States.

Volvo’s new South Carolina plant is responsible for producing the third-generation S60 for both the U.S. and international markets. The new factory, which spans nearly 70 million square feet, is slated also to build the XC90 crossover SUV beginning in 2021.

Like the V60 wagon, the 2019 S60 sits on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. The underpinnings also form the basis of the larger S90 sedan and V90 wagon as well as the XC60 and XC90 crossovers. As in those vehicles, the S60 will be motivated by multiple variations of the brand’s forced-induction 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Entry-level S60 T5 models use a turbocharged version of the engine, while the T6 gets the 2.0-liter fitted with both a turbocharger and a supercharger. As in the V60, the S60 T5 makes 250 horsepower and is paired with front-wheel drive. In T6 guise, the engine is good for 316 horses, and all-wheel drive is standard.

Additionally, the S60 will be offered in two different plug-in hybrid forms: T6 and T8. Volvo tells us the 340-hp T6 plug-in will be for export markets, leaving the 400-hp T8 all-wheel-drive version as the sole gasoline-electric S60 model for the States. The T8 also will be offered in a new Polestar Engineered performance model, which ups the powertrain’s output to 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque and includes adjustable Öhlins dampers, a strut-tower brace cribbed from the 600-hp Polestar 1 gasoline-electric hybrid coupe, and distinct 19-inch wheels that sit over big brakes with gold-painted Brembo front calipers. Volvo plans to offer the S60 Polestar Engineered solely through its Care by Volvo monthly subscription plan.

Pricing for the Polestar isn’t yet available, but two other subscription choices for the S60 are the T6 Momentum at $775 per month and the T6 R-Design for $850. Both are available with Premium package and Multimedia package options. As with the XC40 Care by Volvo subscription, the term is 24 months (although you can swap for a different car after 12 months) and includes 15,000 miles allotted per year plus insurance, service, and maintenance.

All S60 models-other than the Polestar Engineered-also can be purchased or leased in the traditional way, in which case prices range from $36,795 for the T5 Momentum to $56,395 for the T8 Inscription. Even the base Momentum (which is available with the T5 or T6 powertrain) includes the brand’s City Safety system featuring automated emergency braking with steering assist, along with a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights, and 18-inch wheels. The sporty R-Design model (available in T5, T6, or T8 form) includes nappa leather sport seats and R-Design–specific interior and exterior trim. The top-spec Inscription (also offered with all three powertrains) brings power seats with adjustable lumbar and cushion-length extenders, four-zone automatic climate control, and more exterior chrome. Lane-keeping assist and Pilot Assist, Volvo’s semi-autonomous driving system, also are available.

Traditional lease and purchase cars will reach showrooms in late 2018; Volvo isn’t yet saying when subscription cars will be delivered.
