Bon appétit: Food tours dishing out unique experience in Saskatchewan

Regina's downtown is bustling with options for a night on the town for your tastebuds, but sometimes it can be hard to pick just one place for dinner.

Enter Taste-It Food Tours.

The idea of food tours isn't new in many North American cities. Patti Rodger, founder of Taste-It Food Tours in Saskatchewan, was first exposed to the idea while spending some winter vacations in Phoenix, Ariz.

"[I] stumbled across them in Scottsdale," Rodger told CBC's The Morning Edition. "As friends of mine came down to visit, we went on several of them and actually it was one of my girlfriend's ideas that we should be bringing this to Saskatchewan. And so that spring, three years ago, I came home with that idea and I launched it in Moose Jaw."

Three years later, Patti Rodger and Taste-It Food Tours now run food tours in Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, and Cypress Hills.

"The reaction has been very, very positive in any place that we have launched," she said. "Everybody is very pleased. The restaurants are very hospitable, and we've been very fortunate to have a good go for the last three years."

In Regina, there are currently two different tours. One takes people around Wascana Lake, making stops at the legislative building, Bliss Bistro and The Willow on Wascana.

There is also a downtown tour, which Rodger said takes people to Beer Brothers, Malt City, 20TEN City Eatery, Victoria's Tavern, and The Capitol.

Along with trying some new food, there's also storytelling that goes along with the food stops.

"Firstly, it's a great opportunity to get to know the area, and to learn some of the history about the area," Rodger said. "Secondly, you can sample several restaurants in a short three hours, and then you know where you want to go back to to spend your dining dollars."

According to the Taste-It Food Tours website, people will spend "approximately 20 minutes at the establishment and enjoy a sample plate of a 'signature' dish — one of which the restaurant is especially proud."
