BMW X5 xDrive40e Adds Plug-in Hybrid Technology to Sport Activity Vehicle Lineup

At the 2015 Shanghai International Motor Show, BMW officially unveiled the new X5 xDrive40e, a plug-in hybrid version of its popular midsize Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV). Offering 19 miles of electric driving range, the BMW X5 xDrive40e is expected to arrive for the 2016 model year.

Equipped with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, 8-speed automatic transmission, and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the new X5 xDrive40e features an electric motor powered by a Lithium-ion battery pack that is located beneath the vehicle's cargo area. BMW promises "no compromise on luggage space." Combined, the system generates 313 horsepower, can travel at speeds up to 75 mph on electricity alone, and accelerates the X5 xDrive40e to 60 mph in less than 6.8 seconds, according to BMW.

Three different electric drive modes are available, selected using the eDrive button on the X5's center console. Auto mode provides performance-enhancing electric assist for acceleration and for passing slower traffic. Max mode is used for electric-only driving. Save mode preserves maximum battery charge in order to use the system's 19 miles of total range in urban driving situations. These eDrive modes work in conjunction with the X5's Driving Experience Control system, which provides Comfort, Sport, and EcoPro powertrain settings.

To recharge the X5 xDrive40e owners will either plug the vehicle in to a home electrical outlet, use an optional BMW i Wallbox charger that can halve recharging time, or use a public charging station. A standard BMW Remote smartphone app can help the X5 xDrive40e's owner to find the nearest charging station, as well as to remotely check charging status, activate the climate control system to heat or cool the interior prior to driving, and more. Additionally, energy management technology is baked into the standard navigation system, showing the driver the most efficient routes to travel to a destination based on distance, terrain, and traffic conditions.

BMW plans to offer most of the options that are available for the standard X5 range on the new xDrive40e. That includes the M Sport Line of trim and hardware upgrades, BMW Individual custom tailoring, and other enhancements. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle's arrival at BMW dealerships.
