BMW Unveils Concept X2 Crossover SUV and Other Models at Paris Motor Show

This week, BMW previewed at the 2016 Paris Motor Show the new Concept X2 crossover SUV in addition to unveiling several other models—the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo and its latest i3 with a more powerful battery and greater driving range. The Paris auto show is open to the public from Oct. 1-16.

BMW’s Concept X2 compact crossover was unveiled featuring coupe elements of the German luxury automaker’s X1. It rides on large wheels and is built on architecture that features a longer wheelbase and stretched roofline for a sporty “low-slung” feel, similar to its larger, sporty X4 and X6 siblings. Big air intakes are positioned on the sides of the new X2 and the kidney-shaped grilles have been restyled with an upside down design and are not connected to lighting systems as in other recent BMW models. BMW says the new X2 will be front-wheel drive (FWD) and powered by 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter engines. News reports indicate the production version will reach dealer showrooms by late 2017.

Also unveiled in Paris, the new 3 Series Gran Turismo has been updated with the spaciousness of a luxury sedan and the cargo capacity of a station wagon, according to BMW officials. Both gasoline and diesel engines are offered to power the elegant Gran Turismo variant, which also will feature a new navigation interface and enhanced smartphone connectivity.

BMW also is unveiling a new i3 (94 Ah) with a 50% improvement in electric driving range compared with the first-generation i3. The new i3 can travel an equivalent of 186 miles on a charge vs. 118 miles in the previous version, according to BMW. The automaker also is providing faster charging options for its i3. In addition, BMW said that owners of first-generation i3 vehicles can have the new 94 ampere-hours battery pack units retrofitted into their current vehicles with 60 Ah battery packs. BMW also said that it will present a new variant of its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car called the Protonic Dark Silver Edition in Paris.
