BMW Officially Unveils Fierce, Track-Ready 2016 M4 GTS in Limited Edition

Less than two months after first displaying the vehicle at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance in Monterey, Calif., BMW has officially introduced its 2016 M4 GTS Coupe, claiming that it is a technological masterpiece and the most agile and powerful M4 ever. Only 300 of the special-edition premium compact car that is ready for the track and the road will be available in the U.S. market.

The new M4 GTS Coupe features what may be an industry first in a road car: an innovative water-injection system to boost power. The new system, which features a 1.3-gallon water tank, helps boost engine power with a water mist that absorbs heat and lowers air intake temperature, which increases turbocharger pressure and spark timing. This helps the Special Edition M4 GTS twin-turbo, inline 6-cylinder engine generate 493 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,250 rpm—an increase of 16% over the standard M4. The M4 GTS is only offered with a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission.

According to BMW, chassis weight has been lightened by some 200 lbs. and the M4 GTS paces 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and maximum speed is 189.5 mph, compared with 155 for the standard M4. Fuel efficiency is nearly the same as in the M4, according to BMW, and the water-injection system helps lower emissions. Performance is heightened with a 3-way, adjustable coil-over suspension, and anti-roll bars and supporting mounts have been set up differently. The steering column has an adjustment and power assist has been retuned.

Inside, the M4 GTS is minimalist and set up like a race car without rear seats. The center console and door panels have also been lightened; straps replace door handles. Outside, a carbon fiber hood replaces aluminum. A rear wing, diffuser, and front splitter are also made of carbon and the exhaust is throttle-worthy titanium.

The rear lights of the BMW M4 GTS are the first of any series-produced model to feature BMW Organic Light with OLED technology. Just like a track car, the M4 GTS comes with a roll bar and fire extinguisher.

Pricing for the 2016 BMW M4 GTS will be revealed later.
