Blue Jays trade John Axford to Brewers in exchange for literally one dollar

Apparently all it took was some pocket change to acquire the services of Canadian pitcher John Axford.

The product of Simcoe, Ont., was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday for exactly $1, according to the Associated Press.

You read that right. One loonie, four quarters, 10 dimes, or 20 nickels were sent to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for the relief pitcher. It's certainly fair to say that the Brewers are making the most of every dollar at their disposal.

Getting Axford for a buck is a nice bargain for Milwaukee. The 2011 National League Reliever of the Year has performed well for triple-A Buffalo this season, pitching to a sparkling 0.84 ERA in 10.2 innings of work.

The right-handed veteran spent the first four-plus seasons of his career with the Brewers before logging time with seven other teams. The 38-year-old hasn't pitched in the majors since 2018.

Even though MLB's trade deadline was July 30, the dollar deal was allowed to happen because Axford wasn't part of Toronto's 40-man roster.
