Best women’s fragrances for spring and summer 2021

 (Jo Malone)
(Jo Malone)

“Don’t you have enough fragrances?” my friends and family ask - nay plea - as I add yet another to my virtual basket.

To borrow a line from Lindsay Lohan in the infinitely quotable Mean Girls, ‘the limit does not exist’. Can you really ever have too many? I think not.

Fragrances are so subjective and personal. They ignite one feeling for someone and something entirely different for the next. They can give immediate nostalgia or deja vu. Scent can send you back to a time or remind you of a person you’ve long forgotten. They can transport you away to warmer, or colder climes - from Copacabana to the heights of Everest.

In short, they are the ultimate beauty must-have after spending the best part of a year confined to our homes. Perfume is the single most powerful tool for switching up your situation even if nothing is changing at all.

That’s why, for spring and summer 2021, a year on from the first lockdown and the start of our re-emergence, we feel it’s more important than ever to share the latest fragrance launches. The pandemic may have changed life as we’ve known it - maybe forever - but it hasn’t stopped innovation in the world of fragrance, nor has it halted our hunt for our next signature scent.

See our favourites below.

Jo Malone Red Hibiscus

We may be firmly stuck on British soil for the foreseeable but that doesn’t stop our senses from running wild and more specifically, to the tropical paradise of Hawaii where Jo Malone’s latest fragrance launch takes its inspiration. Red Hibiscus - a bloom typically only found in warmer climes - takes a starring role in this scent. It is combined with Jasmine Sambac, and warm vanilla for an intense vivid solar floral aroma that is somehow both fresh and deep. The housing also breaks from the signature Jo Malone design with a rounded glass look and red hue.

Byredo Mixed Emotions Eau de Parfum

If there was ever a name to capture our lives right now, Byredo has hit the nail on the head. The luxury perfume house has added another cult aroma to its repertoire to reflect the less than typical state of affairs right now. The fragrance notes, considered once to be contrasting and contradictory, blend seamlessly in an aroma you won’t be able to stop yourself from sniffing. It opens with sweet cassis and cosy mate, with black Ceylon tea and violet leaf at the heart and warm birch wood and papyrus at the base.

Jo Loves Cobalt Patchouli & Cedar Fragrance

We’ve come to expect great things with each of the Jo Loves fragrance launches and they never seem to disappoint as shown with the latest Cobalt Patchouli & Cedar. The scent takes inspiration from blue skies as the olfactory symbol for springtime and positive vibes. It has uplifting notes of green vetiver with a sweet but spicy combination of patchouli and cedar at the base. The aroma has a more masculine twist than some of the others in the range, while remaining fresh and summer-ready.

Jimmy Choo I Want Choo

It’s the biggest scent launch since the original in 2011 and Jimmy Choo does not disappoint with ‘I Want Choo’. The feminine fragrance is bold but playful with a sensual aroma that is perfect for date nights in beer gardens. The oriental floral aroma is created through top notes of citrus Mandarin juice with a touch of velvety Peach. It is then enhanced with hypnotic Red Spider Lily and Jasmine Sambac. Vanilla and Benzoin is at the base that add to the depth of the scent.

Malin + Goetz Strawberry Eau de Parfum

Keen to always one up themselves, Malin + Goetz’s new fragrance addition is here to rival the hugely popular tomato candle of last summer. Leaning on another fruit, the humble strawberry is placed at the centre of this scent with a dynamic aroma charting its lifecycle from bud to ripeness. For us Brits, strawberries are synonymous with Wimbledon, summer and cream, and the New York apothecary label has captured that feeling in a bottle with an EDP sure to satisfy your olfactory sweet tooth.

Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Black Patchouli Eau de Parfum

Launching exclusively at Harrods, Dolce & Gabbana’s Velvet Black Patchouli scent may not immediately give you the summer spirit but hear us out. It’s designed to tell the story of Italy and the historic Orient influences brought from trade with an East meets West feel.

As the name suggests, Velvet Patchouli is the centre of the heady aroma as the foundation of the fragrance. It has a woody-oriental scent with top notes of Indian davana oil and Tarocco Sicilian blood orange combined with aromatic clary sage at the heart. Musky tobacco and warming tonka bean, vanilla and caramel is the seductive icing on the cake forming the base.
