If you’ve been tossing and turning on a mattress that has seen better days, you might consider an upgrade over the holiday season.

“In the winter, retailers are clearing out mattresses from this year, and are getting ready for new inventory,” explains Claudette Ennis, CR’s market analyst for mattresses. "So the holidays are a great time to search for a discounted mattress.”

CR combed through advertised sales for savings on mattresses that performed well in Consumer Reports’ mattress tests and found a number of options—from Ashley Sleep to Stearns & Foster—that are worth a look.

Below, we’ve rounded up the standout mattress deals we've found at retail this month. If a particular mattress model you're looking for isn’t on sale, look for discounts or promotions on the manufacturer’s website or try to haggle for a better price. (You can haggle with online retailers for a mattress deal, too.) See our comprehensive mattress ratings for specifics on more than 130 models.

The deals here are listed alphabetically, by brand. We'll continue to add deals as we find them between now and the end of the year.

Ashley Sleep
Looking for a mattress for a guest bedroom? The Ashley Sleep Anniversary Edition Firm Queen Mattress offers great value, on sale for $489, about $110 off its full price. That's decent savings, though when CR bought the mattress to test it, we paid slightly less, at $480. The Anniversary Edition Firm receives an Excellent score for petite back sleep support. It isn't so great at supporting large/tall back sleepers, though, so if that fits your profile you might want to consider other options.

Avocado, the maker of our top-rated innerspring mattress, is offering $150 off any mattress purchase through January 7, 2019, by using the online discount code MERRY150 on its website. Military personnel can save an additional $50 with the code HONOR200. The queen-size Avocado Green mattress rated Excellent in our support tests for average-size side and back sleepers, large/tall side and back sleepers, and petite back sleepers, and it's almost as good for petite side sleepers, making it an all-around good choice for many mattress shoppers.

If you’re shopping at Macy’s this holiday season, you'll find what looks like a great mattress deal. The retailer has the Beautyrest Silver Golden Gate Pillowtop marked down from $1,580 to $717. That's not a bad price, but know that it's not necessarily an uncommon discount—CR paid $800 for the sample we tested. The Silver Golden Gate Pillowtop rated Very Good in support for petite, average, and large/tall side sleepers but just so-so for petite, average, and large/tall back sleepers.

The Nectar mattress, from the bed-in-a-box company of the same name, is one of our recommended foam mattresses. Nectar is currently offering $125 off a mattress, plus two free Nectar pillows through December 27th. The queen-size Nectar earns a Very Good rating for petite and average side sleeper support, and petite and average back sleeper support. Worth noting: There are no grips on this foam mattress, so it might be a bit difficult to maneuver or rotate.

At Macy's, you can snag a Sealy Posturepedic Performance Lawson Euro Pillowtop for $807, about half off the retail price. That's slightly less than what we paid for it. It earns an Excellent rating for petite back support, and doesn't disappoint for other body size and sleep style support. In terms of firmness, this mattress is on the firmer side, earning a six out of 10 in our firmness scale. It's 14 inches high and weighs about 76 pounds, but doesn't come with any grips for rotating or moving around.

Stearns & Foster
Macy’s has marked down the CR-rated Stearns & Foster model, the Signature Garrick Luxury, to $1,259. The current price for the Garrick is only slightly less than what CR paid—we found the mattress for $1,319. The Signature Garrick Luxury is a good choice for petite sleepers. It earned an Excellent rating for small folks who sleep on their back. For folks who prefer a softer mattress, this one scored a 4 for firmness on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the firmest).
