The Best Movies to Watch on St. Patrick's Day

Kate Middleton's St. Patrick's Day Appearance Is One of Her Last Before Maternity Leave

While Valentine's Day is made for rom-coms and Christmas practically has an entire movie industry built around it, St. Patrick's Day isn't exactly a silver screen-watching holiday for most. This year, however, with coronavirus lockdowns still in place and parades and public celebrations canceled, you may find yourself spending time indoors and in need of something to, well, watch.

Ahead, are six great movies to watch on St. Patrick's Day.

Leap Year

Amy Adams stars in this rom-com that involves a Celtic tradition that allows women to propose to their beaus on February 29. Naturally, her character Anna has to wrangle a trip to Dublin for the occasion and a handsome local manages to throw a snag in her very well-planned itinerary

Brooklyn

Saoirse Ronan plays Eilis Lacey, who leaves her small town in Ireland for a life in New York City. Sure, the premise seems like the same old thing, but the combination of family tragedy and old-school shots of Brooklyn and N.Y.C. make this a new classic for a reason

Once

Two down-on-their-luck musicians meet up in Dublin and after a meet-cute, become more than just musical partners. The song "Falling Slowly" won the 2008 Oscar for Best Original Song and the movie itself won the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film.

The Luck of the Irish

An OG Disney Channel Original Movie, The Luck of the Irish dates back to 2001 and has all the signatures of made-for-TV movies. There are dated special effects, a very predictable plot, and plenty of slapstick, and wholesome family moments for an easy watch to celebrate St. Paddy's.

Philomena

Teenage wedlock and being banished to a convent may not sound like a heartwarming combination, but this Judi Dench flick delivers just that. While it doesn't directly mention St Patrick's Day, there are plenty of shots of the Irish countryside for anyone hoping to get a closer look at the Emerald Isle.

Waking Ned Devine

A comedy involving covering up death, the lottery, and an entire community coming together to keep the winnings doesn't sound like usual St. Patrick's Day fare but set the story in Ireland and you've got a new classic.
